We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

Pittsburg Steelers or Miami Heat...which team is more hated?

Wild card weekend is now over and for only the third time (2000 & 2006) all four home teams won. Everyone knows the results so I won’t go there, but I will list a few observations from the entire weekend.
- I would also like an explanation on how officials spot the ball on plays. One particular play in the Giants-Falcons game before halftime was of particular interest. There seems to be a bit of variance in where guys get to and where the ball is spotted. I understand it’s a judgment call, but this seems to be the most inconsistent part of the game these days, in my eyes.
- We really need to review the instant replay rules. The Broncos got burnt by officials blowing a whistle on a pass that was clearly backwards, thus a fumble. Once the whistle blows, it is dead. Why not change that to the rule that came into affect Saturday night in Saints game and if the whistle blows and the defense recovers the ball, it is their ball at the spot of recovery. This play, since the Broncos won, won’t be as big a part of the discussion this week as it would have been if the Steelers had come back to win.
- The protection of receivers is getting ridiculous. Saturday evening, a Detroit defender grazed a Saints receiver’s helmet and a flag was thrown. It seems like any big shot across the center of the field now automatically draw a flag.
- Reading twitter and Facebook Sunday evening, do the Steelers now have the love/hate following that only a few other teams have? Who do people think is hated more, the Steelers or the Miami Heat?
- Did anyone see the Broncos-Steelers ending the way it did today? Once the game went to overtime, I thought Denver was done.
- Was in just a coincidence that Tebow threw for 316 yards today? YES.
- How excited is CBS to have the Broncos-Patriots game next Saturday night? I am guessing there are some executives in New York drooling over the numbers that game will generate next weekend.
- Eli Manning is a great quarterback. As a Cowboys fan that is difficult for me to say, but damn he is good. This was Eli’s first win at home in a playoff game. Do you think that the Packers may review what happened in 2007 before next Sunday?
- As is the case with these situations, Mike Smith will be questioned for both of the failed 4th down attempts. I not only question both calls in a close game, but both as QB sneaks when you have Michael Turner in the backfield? Why go empty backfield on the second call?
- Atlanta Falcons are now 0-3 in the playoffs with Matt Ryan as QB and Mike Smith as HC. I know getting there is a big accomplishment, but at some point SOON, they need to take that next step. The pressure will be on the Falcons to do that next season, in a division that should be more competitive in 2012.
- The Packers rested some guys in Week 16 and had a bye this weekend. I wonder if there will be some rust next weekend. If the Giants can come out and score early, it will put a bit of pressure on the Packers at home.
- The Detroit Lions WR may be as good as their secondary is bad. How many opportunities did the Lions secondary have to make a play against Drew Brees and fail?
- Calvin Johnson is a beast. Nothing else needs to be said.
- Drew Brees is a bigger beast. The only reason I say this is Brees can make plays on every play. Interested to see what happens with the Saints and Brees in his contract discussions after this season.
- Detroit was still plagued by some penalties in bad situations. Maturity is needed.
- Do you think Reggie Bush would trade places with Darren Sproles right now. He is excelling in Bush’s old spot.
- Brees and company travel to the west coast and San Francisco for the early game Saturday. This will be strength vs. strength in the Saints offense against the 49ers defense. Alex Smith may be the key to the outcome of this game.
- Well, TJ Yates now has a better playoff record that Matt Ryan. It doesn’t hurt that Texas has a great defense, offensive line and running game. Those three aspects of the game performing well create a situation where a rookie QB can succeed.
- The Bengals made the playoffs and that seemed to be enough for them. Andy Dalton had one of his worst games of the season.
- The Texans travel to Baltimore next weekend. The Ravens won the regular season matchup this year.
- Arian Foster getting his touches is important. I saw a stat Sunday that said when Foster gets 30+ touches, the Texans are 6-0. I expect a low scoring game here.
