Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

The BS that is the BCS

According to numerous reports, Kurt Busch has been released by Penske Racing. NASCAR is so sponsor-driven, so when drivers are involved in incidents that are caught on tape, such as Busch with ESPN reporter Dr. Jerry Punch, the sponsors are going to have a reaction. This is the second time that Busch’s behavior has cost him a great ride. The timing of this also may affect Busch’s ability to find a quality ride for the 2012 season. Also, who will fill the ride that Busch’s departure opens up?

The Carolina Panthers are on a two game winning streak. Granted the two teams that the Panthers have beat the last two weeks are a combined 4-20, but the Panthers have done something they could not do in the recent past, win back to back weeks. The Panthers are now 4-8 with the Falcons coming into Charlotte next week. The Falcons are still very much in the playoff race so a road division win would be very important to them. The Panthers have a great chance to play spoiler, as three of the final four opponents are playoff teams.

The BCS proves yet again, what a punch of BS this system really is. Alabama, who did not win their division, much less their conference, lost to LSU at home and gets rewarded with an opportunity to play LSU for the BCS Championship. Oklahoma State wins the Big 12 Championship, which has been rated the #1 conference all season long, gets sent to the Fiesta Bowl to play Stanford. There was a great chart sent out by the Oklahoma State SID department showing how Oklahoma State won every statistical category, just not the eye test.
The other way the BcS is a complete failure is the Sugar Bowl. #11 Virginia Tech takes on #13 Michigan in New Orleans. As an ACC fan, this is great seeing the conference get two teams into the BcS for the first time. As a football fan, how do you not take Boise State (#7) or Kansas State (#8) over either of these teams? Virginia Tech beat NO ONE that was ranked this season. Boise State beat Georgia in Atlanta. Mr. Herbstreit on ESPN called it a shame that bowls are more concerned with selling hotel rooms and tickets over putting the best games on the field. Someone needs to remind him that he favors this system over a playoff. He cannot have his cake and eat it too! This entire system needs to be blown up and a true playoff format started. People can no longer say the regular season is a playoff if they are giving Alabama a, “do-over.”

I have caught a lot of grief with my Tarheels losing two games in seven days. Lose them in November-February, not in March and April. Looking at things, the conference is going to again be a two horse race (can Virginia make it 3?) with Duke. The next nine are in Chapel Hill, so hopefully they can get on a little run and figure out things before they get into the meat of ACC play.

Tiger Woods won his first golf tournament in 749 days Sunday to win the Chevron World Challenge. The good news is that he finished strong and looked like Tiger Woods in this win. The bad thing was that it occurred opposite of a lot of NFL games, so I am not sure how many people really watched it down the stretch.

The NBA is coming back on Christmas day. Not sure what else to say about this right now. I know a lot of people are very happy, but from watching so much NCAA college basketball early this season, I am not sure I would have personally missed the NBA this year.
